The functions of behavior! ABA focuses on the functions of behavior, why challenging behaviors occur and how to respond to those behaviors effectively. ABA uses scientific and evidence based practices to address challenging behaviors and understand their functions. Challenging behaviors can function for; Sensory, Escape, Attention and Tangible. These can also be known as the “SEAT” of ABA therapy!
The ABCs of ABA therapy! Antecedents are the events that happen right before a behavior occurs. When looking at the antecedent we can determine the best approach to teaching appropriate behaviors by modifying the antecedents.
Behaviors is any action that the individual demonstrates which can be appropriate behaviors or challenging behaviors.
The Consequence is how others respond to the behavior. The consequence can be used to teach and shapes new behaviors. Positive and negative consequences help children to learn appropriate and desired behaviors.
For this week’s discussion we will be going over “What is ABA?” Applied Behavior Analysis is now recognized nationwide as the most effective type of therapy for children with autism and related disabilities (Lovaas, 1987; McEachin, Smith, & Lovass, 1993; Maurice, Green & Luce, 1996). No other treatment for children with autism and related disabilities has provided extensive empirical research to validate it’s effectiveness with teaching language and communication. The field of ABA has proven that implementation of precise teaching procedures, through the process of motivational variables can result in significant improvements in children (Lovaas & Smith, 1989; Scheibman, 1988; Schreibman, Charlop & Milstein, 1993; Smith 1993).
As we finished last weeks discussion for “What is autism?”, we are starting off this week with our new topic “What to do next?”. In honor of autism awareness and acceptance month we will be going over some helpful resources on what to do next. ABS is here to help provide tools for you and your family to help your child grow and learn, even outside of ABA therapy! For a child receiving ABA therapy we understand the importance of connecting and communicating between all therapies, to best help your child!
